If you are reading this document, then we welcome you as a member of a very special group of individuals.
As an employee, vendor, contractor, or customer of 87ZERO, you are part of a very special organization dedicated to excellence in design, product fabrication, and professionalism. We believe that creativity is the core of the universe, and that all customers and clients seek us to help them tap into that creative energy in some way.
The mission of 87zero is to bring Fun, prosperity and Providence to all through the design and fabrication of custom architectural and interior products.
We believe that a catalog is merely a placeholder for custom solutions and design. And that providing custom products supports the ideas of individual project preference, originality, attention and honor for the items produced.
We think that the industrial age-mentality of making things cheaply and affordably has it’s place, but there are others who look to create originality with machine and craftsman quality that are unmatched in beauty, texture, design and human engineering. 87ZERO believes in the latter. It is the core philosophy of the 21st century maker-movement where machines aid instead of control and stifle human creativity.
We believe that service of our products is as important as the design solution.
In order to maintain this level of quality and brand excellence, the conduct of our team in our relations inside and out of the office is of utmost importance.
As a member of the 87ZERO brand we expect the following values of our employees as well as our clients. We call this the 87ZERO code of conduct.
Truth Always tell the truth. No matter how hard it is. Deception or misleading behavior is not an option.
Accuracy Your communication must be accurate and professional. Your drawings and concepts must be technically accurate. Your assumptions on schedule must be accurate. Your pricing must be accurate.
Fairness and Beneficial conduct When dealing with others you must ask this question of all things you think, say and do: is it fair and beneficial to ALL concerned?
Execution Always do what you say you will do. Hit your deadlines. (Think of deadlines this way: you get your paycheck on time, so you must deliver your work on time.) Expect and graciously demand that clients and customers pay on time as well.
Zero Ego Design is often ego-driven….but there is no ego in design excellence. There is only what the design, product or solution wants to be. Behavior related to power-plays of authority, vanity, ignorance of others’ interests, unfairness to the team, or corruption is not tolerated.
Egos also obfuscate teamwork as we think that we can do EVERYTHING ourselves instead of sharing the load. Sharing makes 87ZERO anti-fragile.
When you walk into the 87ZERO lab and library, all egos are to be left at the door.
When communicating with customers or team members of 87ZERO all egos shall be left out of the communication.
Go beyond Fear holds us back from designing amazing things. Normalcy bias leads us to be blind-sided by catastrophic events. Do not trend to the norm, do not design for the norm. Push to either end of the bell-curve of normalcy….otherwise you will be normal, boring, and fragile.
Going beyond is a philosophy of going beyond the normal to innovate, challenge, and create anti-fragile solutions. Be ready to do so.
This means you will need to put in whatever time it will take to complete the task at hand to meet the schedules you have set for the particular project. (see Execution). Planning and teamwork will help you execute as needed.
Art Incorporate art into everything you do and produce. Incorporate a story or meaning into every work that is produced. If you cannot articulate the story clearly, then you have not thought about it enough.
Fun Design in our industry is a serious business. We have all been in spaces or experienced products or processes that are way too serious. Our clients come to 87ZERO to create new FUN ideas. At 87ZERO, we believe that the element of fun must thread through our design. It's a special, magical ingredient that makes us unique, and gives a unique personality and flair to our creations. We expect you to also carry the contagion of FUN in every project. Your client experience, as with all creativity, should be a fun and exhilarating experience.
1. So what happens if this code is not followed? There are incentives and disincentives. Incentives are praise, stars, smiles, perks, ice cream, and financial reward. Disincentives include: ice cream, yellow card, 2nd yellow card, and termination. In that order.
2. Who judges this? Your supervisor, your peers, and your director.
3. How can I learn more about these principles and how to be a better professional or customer? Ask the director. They will help explain, and share experiences, theories and philosophies.
4. What happens if our clients and customers violate the code of conduct? 87ZERO’s agreements have this code of conduct as part of our contracts. We expect all parties to observe this. Violation of the code will be deemed as a contract violation.
5. What does 87ZERO stand for?
8 is prosperity. Prosperity comes to those who follow the code. There is a certain way of thinking about creativity. And it leads to prosperous results for ourselves and our clients when executed properly.
7 is a lucky number or God’s number. For nothing that comes to us is solely by our accord. We believe that prosperity is a vehicle of providence. A tool so that you can move mountains.
Zero is for zero ego. So that we are always mindful of the code.
