Iwilei - Hello 87ZERO followers, it's been a while since we updated you on the latest developments! We've been incredibly busy working on some very exciting projects.
Besides our residential penthouse work that we create, we've been working on several custom furniture design orders as well as some amazing kitchens.
We've decided to target our creations and market to items and projects that have interesting uses, needs and technologies. For example, you can find a number of kitchen designers around town, but the moment you need something to slide out from some hidden location, or stack a bookshelf into a bed, or slide a part of the countertop to hide away - then the selection gets very limited...
Then, it's best to think of 87ZERO - where we love to create high storage use with amazing utility.
Very shortly yours truly will be issuing a white paper that challenges the norms of how you buy kitchens... Quite possibly become a major disruption not only to the kitchen and bath industry, but also to the development industry and the real estate industry.
Just image what would happen to real estate if you decided you wanted to buy a kitchen that was plug & play. A kitchen that you could move with you (including the kitchen sink), and that you would not buy real estate that had a kitchen because you already had one.
Or that you would buy your plug & play kitchen like you buy a car, and that developers had no business offering you the "light" scheme or the "dark" scheme. But instead the kitchen was left with nothing but a port that you plugged into? And of course some generic floors, walls, and directional lighting?
Believe it or not, but it already happens in Germany, and we think that you deserve to have that same option as well. No one should be force-feeding you their idea of the perfect kitchen... especially a developer! And I'm quite sure they would rather NOT do that either!
So please stay tuned for that white paper. It will even claim to help the affordable housing situation! Which I personally believe it can... read and you'll get the idea!
Now as for this website - you should have already noticed that we finally came out and admitted that yes... 87ZERO is an industrial design company... focused on, but not limited to architectural environments.
And just to prove it, I'm posting a picture of a dog crate that we just created. You can't get the original version 000 1 & 0002 - because those are reserved for the original dog it was created for. Her name is Goma, and we'd like to introduce you to gomacrate. Look out for it! We'll post a model of it in our store.
You'll notice that we have a store, as well as sections for each type of projects that we do. We have sections for residential kitchens (which we seem to be popular for), stores and restaurants, and then my favorite: special projects - which include gomacrate, new furniture and casework solutions, as well as other non-conventional solutions of amazing craftsmanship and ideation.
We also incorporate art into the work we do, so be sure to browse our featured artists.
And finally at our peeps page, you'll get to meet the personalities that help to create the magic at 87ZERO.
Enjoy the updated site, and look forward to working with you soon!
Let go, and let magic happen!
Iwilei - Happy New year to all! With the new year comes new changes at 87ZERO. It's always a new game here as we are ALWAYS changing it up. These zebra seats - by the way, are for sale. Super fun, and comfy. Don't worry it's not real zebra... although I thought it was originally...
We are officially moving into a design stride of our own. FUN is the word this year, as we will be doing seriously fun projects and designs for you. If it's not fun, or if it's too serious... we probably won't take it on... But if you want something beautiful - with a small hint of fun, playfulness, or things that make you exclaim - "wow!" - then we'll definitely take the project on.
When you look at some environments or buildings - or even furniture... wow - they can be as serious as a prison cell. Beautiful....but maybe way too serious. But since our personality is not like that - and our culture is not like that - so unfortunately we can't design like that either... and we wouldn't want to anyway. If you WANT to be serious all the time - then by all means, go down the road, and you will find an absolutely serious designer... We'll even help you find them! But heed this warning... as serious designer creates a serious environment... and it WILL shape you. It will affect your mood, behavior and outlook on life. Not Kidding!
But if you want to have fun as you design your place... and if you want the design to turn out as a setting for fun... then come and check us out... because it's what we're about and what we believe.
We have even published our code of conduct so you can see the rules that our team must play by... And if you commission us for some work - we'll expect that of you too. click here if you want the down and dirty.
Look forward to seeing you at our shop. come to have fun and get inspired!
yours truly -hale
Last night was the presentation of Betty Martin's art exhibit here at 87ZERO. What a spectacle! Between 87ZERO, Studio Becker Hawaii, and Na Lama Kukui, paintings and collages lined the walls with a showing of Betty's amazing interpretation of Hawaii inspired by.... well - you're going to have to come and see for yourself.... but here's a peak.
The interesting thing about Betty is that she is a sculptor. So her mind works in 3D at an almost visceral level. She is well-known for her work of the angel sculptures which stand atop the Flatiron Building in Manhattan. The interesting thing is that when you see the sculpture and her style - it easily translates to paintings.
Her best paintings in my opinion are the ones that are almost layered with depth. The paint almost becomes sculpture. Now this defies a lot of painter "rules" about effectively building color without too much media... Simply meaning that too much paint means you've got too many layers and don't know what the heck you are doing... or you're working too hard at it.
But in Betty's case the paint almost builds to create the third textural dimension.
The interesting thing is that since she is a sculptor, her eye for creating depth with tones and shades is very good - very natural - and when you put layering on top of that... i can see why so many people love her work.
Betty is moving into a new avenue of plaster finishing that is REALLY exciting. She gave me a tour of some of the homes where she has done this. A sculptor and painter doing crushed stone plastering on a wall.... wow - you will see it immediately. This is for people who love the ancient Italian way, and also for those who see it as a modern and timeless take on what will always be WOW!
So you designers and architects out there - pros and lovers-of check out Betty for not only ART on a canvas... but so, so much more. Your mind will race with the possibilities.
As you know here at 87ZERO - we believe in outliers, extremes, alternatives, options, exceptions, rule-breaking, and antifragility. And we think Betty is a believer too... just see the work, and you'll understand.
Have you seen KOWA before? Or you may have seen their products at one of our booths. But they have a very VERY interesting story. Would you buy products from a company that is 200 years old? What if 1% of their business is ART? The other 99% is a huge conglomerate of products - their main stay: pharmaceuticals. They have unbelievable corporate strength.
But this is quite a way from What they are doing today. This is a special product... almost so special that many people haven't heard about it, and treat their items like construction material... It really is NOT. People ask us to price this by the piece, by the foot, and meter... But the only way to truly experience the power of this material is to really understand that it is an ART installation - not a product that gets put on a wall... Because in many cases KOWA products are free-standing. Or they are off-set from a wall and back-lit. Or the detail and paneling that is goes on is engineered to hold and hide the amazing things going on behind the scenes.
So we'll be showcasing these very unique products like ART. Because truly - that is what this is. The only way to experience this is to see it live. We have a collection of these in our library, and will be mocking up some of it on the wall so we can have some practice working with this very interesting and dynamic material!
We challenge you to think beyond ceramics!
To justify anti-art there must be the existence of art. Ballet Mecanique, directed by Fernand Léger, defines the art development of surrealism in the Dada movement where a number of techniques are used in the film to demonstrate the intention of creating art that supports anti-aesthetics. Although Dadaism is a movement of rejecting traditional art form and theories, the production showcased anti-art artist understand the foundation of traditional art through a medium; in this case a film. Perhaps, this is better described as intellectual art.
This film rejects the original intent of film making portraying a story or conveying an idea. In fact, this film projects a mystical experience and establishes an illusion for the viewer. This film juxtaposes humanization to mechanics. Filmmakers use transitions such as panning left to right, zooming in and out, to create montages. In contrary, Leger distorted the film by breaking away from the traditional way of filming - for instance, the scene where the woman is walking on a lengthy staircase is implied using footage of her walking on the same steps numerous times. Instead of using zoom and fade in and out effects to transition to the next scene, geometric shapes are used to imply a transition. The soundtrack ignores transitions from one scene to the next, however, segments of various soundtracks are used in a repetitive style to suggest a different activity or movement.
Hopefully you've gotten a chance to discover a part of our website dedicated to art and artists. Just check the pull down menu under ART.
87ZERO is about creating custom. And as I thought more about it, we craft art. Our studio/lab creates things that are unique and often one-of-a-kind... Which is ART. So in actuality we create and sell engineered art, fine art, museum-grade art. And we work with all kinds of artists to bring art to the world.
the google definition of ART is: "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power."
wow. it's exactly what we do. We are dedicated to bringing ART to the world. If there were a statement, an elevator pitch, or a simple idea of what 87ZERO is: we are a tribe of people dedicated to bringing ART back into the world. We work in high ART. Which means high quality art. It means that the things we craft are commissions. Unique special things. Difficult to source, difficult to make, beautiful to the senses.
It's hard to find or create ART. It requires dedication to high levels of imagination and creativity. It requires creating poetry in 2 or 3 dimensions. It requires interpreting others, and seeing what they see, feeling what they feel.
I once heard that criticism in any form expends the lowest level of human brain activity.... and that creation takes the highest form. I agree! Coming up with creative ideas takes hard work. Conditioning. Practice. Coming up with creative work that actually takes form is even harder than just coming up with the idea!
So in our world, the imagination giants in our lab are like well-muscled, highly skilled body builders. But it's all in their creative muscles.
Whether we do bars, kitchens, furniture, wall installations, new products, back-lit surfaces, etc... it's all ART. It's engineered ART. But ART is always first. maybe it should be more like: " ART engineered."
If you can come up with a tag line for 87ZERO we're all ears... leave me a reply if you have any good ones!
best regards, Hale

Just three days into our kitchen installation... and already we are progressing at rapido speed. Thanks to JI Premium Construction, we have been rocking out our showroom day and night with new cabinets and wall installation. We've been busy leveling out our super-duper uneven floors and fine tuning our new area. In the next few days, we will be installing cabinet fronts, creating templates for the countertops and receiving appliances. So tune in next week to see the next phase~~~
Recently I was given the opportunity to photograph Vintage Cave Honolulu, one of Hawaii’s premier restaurants and one particular feature caught my eye. The chairs in the grand dining room are designed for this specific table. It’s not just an ordinary table with a mundane circular base where you can fit as many chairs as you would like. Each chair fits nicely into the base and legs of the hand crafted table.
Just to give you an idea our showroom will showcase the newest subzero/wolf appliances, different types of countertops, cool plumbing fixtures, amazing tile backsplashes and best of all our own 87Zero custom cabinetry. The uniqueness of our cabinetry is that it is made here locally and that it has a quick production time. The selection of lacquer is endless as well as the many veneers you can choose from. We can easily accommodate any look and style with our line of cabinetry.
Every week, I will be updating the blog with just glimpses of what is to come... so keep on checking:)
